Steps are the most used concrete on a property and the most dangerous when they fail. Uneven rise, a landing pitched back toward the door, or a crumbling nose are trip hazards on the exact surface everyone uses every day.
We form and pour front stoops, back steps, landings and porch steps across Lake County and Kenosha County, including the railings' embedded anchors where they are needed.
Rise, run and code
Step geometry is governed, not chosen. Rise has to be consistent within a tight tolerance across the whole flight, because the human foot notices variation far smaller than most people expect, and inspectors measure it.
We set the total rise against the door threshold and the finished grade first, then divide it into equal steps, rather than pouring a stack of steps and shimming the last one.
Landings and pitch
The top landing pitches away from the door. A landing that pitches back sends water at the threshold and, in January, freezes there.
Landing depth matters too: enough room to stand with the storm door swinging toward you without stepping back off the edge.
Repair versus replacement
Spalled step noses and chipped edges can often be rebuilt with a bonding agent and repair mortar when the structure underneath is sound. It is a fraction of the cost of replacement and it buys real years.
Where the step has settled, separated from the house, or the whole flight is crumbling, patching is throwing money at it. We will tell you which one you have.
Railings and anchors
Where a railing is required or wanted, anchors get set into the wet concrete rather than drilled in afterward. Drilled anchors in the edge of a step are the most common reason a step nose blows out later.
We coordinate with whoever is fabricating the railing so the anchor spacing is right the first time.

Why concrete fails in Lake County
Lake County sits on clay that holds water instead of draining it, and the freeze-thaw cycle here runs from November into March. Add the salt that goes down after every storm and you have the three things that kill concrete. Slabs that survive are air-entrained, poured on a compacted stone base, pitched so water leaves, jointed on a proper grid, and kept off salt through their first winter.
- Freeze-thaw scaling. Water gets into the surface, freezes and lifts the top layer off in flakes. It comes from too much water in the mix, finishing while bleed water is still on the slab, or skipping the air entrainment exterior concrete needs here.
- Road salt damage. De-icing salt accelerates surface scaling badly. New concrete should not see salt through its first winter and should be sealed before the second.
- Slabs poured on clay. Most cracked driveways in this county went down on disturbed clay with no compacted stone under them. Clay holds water, water freezes, the slab lifts.
- Control joints cut late or shallow. Concrete is going to crack. Joints decide where. Cut at the wrong depth or a day late and the slab picks its own line across the middle.
- Water pitched toward the house. A patio or walk sloping the wrong way puts water against the foundation every time it rains and freezes there in January.
- Settled and heaved sections. Where the slab is sound but has dropped, lifting or a single section replacement costs a fraction of a full tear-out.
Before we arrive
- Clear vehicles, trailers and anything stored on the slab the night before
- Leave an outside spigot reachable
- Mark any private irrigation, invisible fence or low-voltage lighting lines in the work area
- Plan for no vehicle access across the work for about a week after the pour
- Keep pets and kids off fresh concrete until we say it is ready
- If a village permit is involved, allow time for it before the pour date

Can my crumbling steps be repaired instead of replaced?
Often, if the structure underneath is sound. Spalled noses and chipped edges rebuild well. Settled or separated flights do not, and patching those is wasted money.
Why did my stoop pull away from the house?
It settled, usually because it was poured on backfill that was never properly compacted, or because it has no footing below frost depth.
Do steps need a footing?
A flight of any height generally does, below frost depth, or it rides up and down with the seasons and separates from the house.
Can you set railing posts in the concrete?
Yes, and that is the right way. Anchors drilled into the edge of a finished step are the most common cause of a blown-out step nose.
How long before we can use new steps?
Light foot traffic after a couple of days, normal use after about a week, depending on temperature.
